VKV shines at Governor’s Quiz competition
ITANAGAR, Nov 15: Amarjeet Singh and Deep Jyoti Sapkota of VKV Nirjuli bagged the first position in the State Level Governor’s GK Quiz Competition 2014 held at Govt Hr Sec School here today.
Yigam Haider and Pema Noksol of VKV Roing came second while Vijay Sinha and Sumeeta Singpho of GHSS Changlang came third. The first position holders were awarded with running trophy along with cash prizes and merit certificates while the second and third position holders were awarded with merit certificates and cash prizes.
State level painting competition on energy conservation
ITANAGAR, Nov 15: The State level painting competition on ‘Energy Conservation’ was organized by Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Govt. of India, Ministry of Power in association with APEDA, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh and NHPC Arunachal Pradesh unit at Banquet Hall here today.
This competition is a part of national awareness campaign launched by Bureau of Energy Efficiency and Ministry of Power (Government of India) in order to encourage and develop the spirit of energy conservation among children, informed Executive Director, NHPC Arunachal Pradesh unit. He also said the winner of the competition will be awarded by the President of India at Vigyan Bhawan.
Over 11000 students took part in the competition throughout the country, he said.

TEZU, Nov 15: Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was conducted at various establishments at Tezu today.
The residents of SE Complex, Tezu participated in a cleanliness drive conducted by the Superintending PWD, Tezu.

SBI branch with ATM facility demanded
ITANAGAR, Nov 15: The Galo Students' Union (GSU) has urged the State Bank of India (SBI) authority for establishment of its branch at Dumporijo with ATM facility.
In its memorandum to the Assistant General Manager of SBI, Itanagar said that Upper Subansiri is a vast district in terms of geographical, population etc. and with single SBl at the district headquarters Daporijo the public have been facing hardship in doing their banking businesses due to ever growing population.
“Moreover Dumporijo ADC administrative centre has large population with many government establishments and people of the constituency have been demanding for a SBl branch at Dumporijo since long.”
“SBI Daporijo is overcrowded with customers due to which some of the customers from distant places, like Maro and Baririjo administrative circles sometimes have to go back homes without doing their banking businesses. Government employees too find it hard to draw their monthly salary due to rush and crowd at SBl Daporijo,” it said.
GSU hoped establishment of a SBI branch at Dumporijo with ATM facility would benefit the people of the area to a large extent.

Students demand resumption of APST bus service
ITANAGAR, Nov 15: Claiming that skyrocketting prices of essential commodities due to discontinuation of APST bus service from Itanagar to Nyapin and Koloriang in Kurung Kumey district hit the common hard, the All Kurung Kumey District Students Union (AKKDSU) today requested the state transport department for early resumption of APST bus service from Itanagar to those places.

89 defunct schools and 262 run by single teachers: Taloh
AALO, Nov 15: “There are 89 defunct schools, 262 schools run by single teachers while there are many schools which are flooded with teachers”, said Education Minister Tapang Taloh. He was speaking at the Children’s Day and Golden Jubilee Celebration of Govt Middle School, Ngomdir yesterday.
Taloh said that opening of schools depend on the popular public demand and the heaps of memoranda regarding problems of school everywhere speak volumes of the ground realities about the plight of the schools.
Reiterating his stand on the transfer and posting of teachers, Taloh said the rationalization
of transfer and posting of teachers was initiated to do away with such disproportionate
distribution of teachers. The exercise will be taken up afresh in the months of February-
Lauding the school for completion of 50 years, the Minister said that it was a moment for the villagers to rejoice. The Govt Middle School Ngomdir is celebrating its Golden Jubilee year coinciding with the Children’s Day from November 14 to 19.
While responding to a memorandum submitted by Kirbom Ngomdir, ZPM Aalo East on the occasion, the Minister assured to do whatever is possible from his side.
The minister also unveiled the Golden Jubilee Souvenir of the school and distributed mementos to teachers, architects, pioneers and 120 alumni of the school who are contributing immensely for the growth of the school and even constructed a well equipped Golden Jubilee Prayer Hall through voluntary contributions.
Late Sento Taba, the first teacher to serve the school, was felicitated posthumously.
Aalo East MLA Jarkar Gamlin and Aalo West MLA Tumke Bagra, were among those who spoke on the occasion.
Later, at Kombo, the minister had a brief discussion with the public leaders and the school authority. The public of Kombo called for construction of boundary wall around 10 hectares of land donated to the school, 50 bedded hostel for boys and girls, multipurpose auditorium in the school etc. He also visited Tadin.

State BJP demands review of MoUs
ITANAGAR, Nov 15: Arunachal Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) vice president Sotai Kri has urged Union Minister of State for Energy Piyush Goyal to review MoUs signed by the state government to build dams and other hydro power projects across the state.
In his letter to Goyal, Kri alleged that Arunachal has signed more than 35000 MW of hydro projects without following procedures.
Kri added that MoUs of dams are scam larger than Coalgate.
Drawing the attention of the MoS for Energy towards the alleged unsuccessful mini hydel projects, he claimed that due to embezzlement and irregularities 75 percent of the mini hydel projects have failed to materialize.
He also demanded the Union Minister of State to recommend CBI investigating into the alleged scam. The BJP state vice president also said that there is a project on the opposite of Parshuram Kund which is a threat to the holy pilgrimage site.
He requested the Minister to review the project so that it could be shifted at least 5 kms away from the present site.

Vijay, younger brother of Arunachal Press Club president Chopa Cheda, is survived by his father, mother, four brothers and four sisters.
Vijay after inspecting the road for construction was reversing his vehicle when the accident occurred at Hunli, about 90 km away from Roing. His thrown out body was recovered around 30 metres below the spot but the vehicle went thousands of feet down beyond recovery, family sources said.
The mortal remains are being brought by road to Itanagar for the last rites tomorrow.
Meanwhile, members of Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ), Arunachal Press Club (APC) and Gyadom Cheda Welfare Society have expressed deep shock at the tragic incident and termed the death a great loss not only for the family but the society. They prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
Koloriang takes pledge to conserve wildlife
KOLORIANG, Nov 15: In view of the rampant destruction of forests leading to rapid decline in the population of various species of wildlife, the Department of Forests, Kurung Kumey district along with the Wildlife Protection Committee, Koloriang organized a public awareness campaign about the importance of protection and conservation of forests and wildlife here today. Speaking on the occasion, Koloriang MLA Pani Taram stressed the need for imposing a blanket ban on hunting and fishing using explosives, bleaching powder, generators and massive felling of trees for timber, jhum cultivation and firewood. He insisted on framing strict rules in every village of the area against these illegal practices and to follow these rules by taking strict actions against the violators. He suggested formation of village level wildlife protection committees under the Gaon Burahs and the Panchayat leaders who would monitor such activities and report to the District Administration for necessary action. He also appealed to all the Panchayat leaders and public to set aside their political differences and work towards a common cause for the betterment of the area.
As a mark of an oath to abstain from hunting activities, three persons surrendered their firearms to the district administration. The Additional Deputy Commissioner while appreciating the gesture called upon the people to come forward and follow their footsteps and surrender their firearms as well. He assured the people that the district administration would be stringent in taking actions against the guilty. He hoped that the public would cooperate with the administration by lodging complaints against those involved in such illegal activities.

Terming wildlife as a huge assets for promoting tourism in the area, he requested all those attended the programme to spread more awareness in their respective villages.
Several resolutions were passed unanimously which included complete ban on any kind of hunting activities in the entire district, formation of village and circle level wildlife protection committees under respective administrative officers, taking up of strict actions against the defaulters and inclusion of awareness related talks in the curriculum of schools of the area.

Intensify night patrolling: DC
Seppa, Nov 15: East Kameng Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kr. Singh has directed the police to intensify night patrolling with proper route map and random checking of vehicles through nakas.
The directions were made in the review meeting held yesterday to take stock of the law and order situation in East Kameng district by the East Kameng district administration.
It was also decided to issue prohibitory orders within Seppa town restricting movement of minors or groups in midnight, gambling, and housie etc.
In the meeting convened at the DC’s chamber, various grievances were heard upon from the representatives present and possible solutions were discussed to tackle the complaints.

Flights of fantasy

It was my fourth solo sortie on the Hunter fighter aircraft. We were flying at a height of 20,000 feet positioning for some aerobatic manoeuvres. The sheer joy of flying was unmatched and only those privileged few could sense the joy and elation of solo flying in the sky. The absolute sense of freedom, separated from the earthly living, made possible a utopian dream to be fulfilled only by aviators. Your own fate and destiny now lay in your own skills of manoeuvring the ten ton machine in the sky.
All the dials indicated that the Hunter was behaving like the ‘fair lady’ she was supposed to be. It is then that I heard an unfamiliar sound and saw the dials winding down crazily. In a moment I realised that the engine of my aircraft was failing! I went into denial mode. How could an engine failure occur when everything was perfectly normal till now? But the dials kept winding down and I went into a state of shock. The numerous dials I was trained to read at a glance vanished right in front of my eyes and my brain was suddenly spinning around. Time seemed to have stopped with eternity setting in.
After a few eternal seconds, I snapped out of this state of shock and a serene calmness
set in and I got into the task of tackling the emergency at hand. I put the Hunter
in a glide towards base. I called out on the radio that I had an engine failure in
the air. I attempted three re-
I decided that it was time to leave the stricken aircraft and informed base on the radio that I would be carrying out an ejection. The thought of ejection reminded me of the ejection just six months earlier when the pilot lost his life as the parachute did not open in the air. Then I saw the twin towns of Kharagpur and Midnapur straight ahead in our path. I informed base that I would be turning right away from the twin towns and ejecting. By then we were at 9000 feet height.
I grasped the ejection handle above my head with both hands, straightened out my sitting posture and pulled the ejection handle. Time seemed to move in slow motion. Something was pushing me from below my seat. The rockets underneath the seat had fired and the myriad sequence of automatic ejection procedure in split seconds precision had been activated. I saw the glass canopy on top flying off and felt the rush of cold air hitting my body. I was being thrown out of the Hunter aircraft at a speed of 100 feet per second exposing my body to forces equivalent to 30 times the body weight. At this stage I blacked out and tumbled through the air.
When I regained my senses, I found myself floating in the air with the cool air breezing past my body. I looked up and saw the multi coloured canopy of the parachute. The parachute was swaying wildly as the wind was strong. I held the straps of the parachute tightly fearing the parachute would give way. I heard the distant noise of people shouting below me. I looked down and saw tiny specks of people running in my direction. I saw the black smoke from the debris of the crashed aircraft not far away. The wind was pushing me towards the aircraft crash site. The thought of the local people below harming me flashed through my mind. My survival instincts took over and I immediately made a plan to run away from the area after landing. At height, the surroundings appeared serene and beautiful. But as I fell towards earth and came closer to the ground, I found the earth rushing up to meet me. The thought of the fall fracturing my limbs flashed in my mind. And then there was no time. I banged into a muddy paddy field and fell on my back. After falling, I operated the quick release fitment to release the parachute. To my surprise the mud in the paddy field had cushioned my landing and my legs were intact. My plans of fleeing the area came to a grinding halt as I found myself surrounded by hundreds of local villagers. My survival instincts again took over.
“My mother is Bengali” I instinctively blurted out in the little Bengali I knew, since the locals were all Bengalis. Thereafter a few villagers formed a human circle around me holding hands. I sat on the ground. There was no time to notice the gash on my chest with blood oozing out. The gash was caused by my flying overall zippers. Time seemed to have frozen and everything appeared to be moving very slowly. I waited on the ground for about 15 minutes. Due to Time Expansion, I felt that period as one hour. Soon we could hear the sound of the rescue helicopter. The rescue helicopter landed about 20 metres from me, kept its motors running and I immediately got into the chopper. Fearing some hostile action from the locals, the helicopter immediately got airborne.
After the helicopter landed at base, I was taken to the base hospital. In the hospital,

Those who could not make it in the afternoon visited me in the evening and night. I sat propped up on bed all through the afternoon, evening and night. The last visitor departed at ten in the night. The officer’s ward was suddenly quiet. After I was alone in the ward, the severity of the situation hit me. I shuddered thinking of what I had gone through in the day. I could have suffered multiple fractures, cuts and bruises or perhaps could have been dead. The tension in my body being exposed to about 30 ‘g’ was now creeping in. Till now I did not feel it in the din of all attention and affection showered on me throughout the day. I shuddered again with the thought that death had come so close. I had fallen from 9000 feet height to the ground under a parachute and got away safely without even a fracture. It was indeed a new birthday for me!

Earlier, Bagra had submitted a ‘One Point Memorandum’ to Rijiju highlighting the deplorable condition of the existing hospital and exhorting him for restoration and bringing back the glory of the lone hospital of the district.
He informed that the foundation stone for the general hospital was laid by the then Governor of Assam, General S M Srinagesh (Retd) way back in 1959 in the name of Khan Bahadur Sayyid Sir Fazl Ali. He said lacunae on the part of the authorities and their lackadaisical attitude has deprived thousands of poor patients, the much needed health care facilities.
Bagra impressed upon the visiting MoS Home that being the local MP from the area, he must do the needful and influence the authorities in the Central ministry to facilitate in restoring the Aalo District Hospital with all the modern facilities, to mitigate the medical problem faced by the people of the region.
He said that the hospital is in shambles from all angles, whether it was the infrastructure, patient care, cleanliness in and around the hospital and defunct machines.
“On an earlier occasion, Health Minister Kaliko Pul had assured to post a Gynaecologist in the hospital but the assurance is yet to be fulfilled. The hospital has been functioning without one for almost a year after the transfer of the lone Gynaecologist to Arunachal State Hospital, Naharlagun,” he informed Rijiju.
The absence of a gynaecologist, anaesthetics and a paediatrician is matter of grave concern, Bagra said and apprised the visiting MoS for Home that the hospital has been allowed to deteriorate to such an extent over the years due to continuous negligence on the part of the government and step motherly treatment meted out to it by the consecutive Congress Govt.
Along with Bagra, Along East MLA Jarkar Gamlin, the Deputy Commissioner, the DMO accompanied Rijiju during his visit to the hospital.
